Omicron more transmissible but less hazardous than Delta- cite Scientists

With various speculations being raised around the coronavirus pandemic, scientists around the world have claimed that the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, is more contagious with 30 mutations on its spike but is said to be not as dangerous as the Delta and Alpha and other variants of COVID.

A scientist from Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Israel cited that the variant still seems more transmissible than others.

As per the WHO (World Health Organization), Omicron has currently spread to approximately 38 countries. However, no deaths have been reported yet.

A senior physician, Prof. Dror Mevorach, said that the world could assume that there is a possibility that the variant is spreading fast but is not as dangerous.

Mevorach mentioned that this could come as the good news for people worldwide. He said that they had received the news of vaccinated people getting infected, however, their disease appears to be mild.

It is to be noted that population around the world needs to come to terms with the fact that some people will get sick and be treated with the antiviral treatments that may become available, or the vaccines might be slightly tweaked to be more active.

Notably, Mevorach stated that the booster vaccination would offer protection and will last for a long time.

South Africa's Tshwane District Omicron Variant Patient Profile demonstrated that around 80% of the hospital admissions in the last two weeks were the people below the age of 50, out of which the majority did not require oxygen support.

According to credible sources, the world has reported a spike in children, under 5, being admitted to hospital ever since the breakout of Omicron. However, it was too early to tell if young children were susceptible to the disease.
