As wireless operators begin to deploy next generation 5G networks, the technology’s combined faster speed and massive data loads bearing capacity is expected to stimulate the growth of emerging data processing technologies like edge computing.
While cloud computing has opened new possibilities for data storage, edge computing is said to create more processing power closer to where the data is generated instead of sending it across long routes to data centers. In a bid to strengthen the position in the 5G edge computing market, numerous tech giants across the world have started investing in this technology.
Intel Corp., an American multinational corporation and technology company, has reportedly made some strides as it announced the acquisition of the Pivot Technology Solutions Inc.’s Smart Edge platform. For the record, Smart Edge is a scalable, secure, and cloud-native platform for multi-access edge computing.
A study suggests that proliferation in IoT would make edge computing a $22.45 billion industry by 2024. Meanwhile, the Smart Edge acquisition is expected to help Intel become a dominant player in the market in the coming time.
Dan Rodriguez, General Manager of the Network Compute and Vice President in the Data Center Group, Intel, stated that this transaction could enhance the company’s ability to address 5G network transformation while being in forefront of the edge computing market.
Meanwhile, sources cite that this move would include Intel and Pivot inking a Preferred Partner Agreement, which would make Pivot an authorized Smart Edge reseller and Intel’s non-exclusive preferred systems integrator for smart edge platform-based systems.
Kevin Shank, CEO of Pivot, claims that Intel is the perfect choice to scale and advance Smart Edge’s software solutions. The company’s deal with Intel would leverage advanced technology solutions developed by Intel and Pivot’s core strengths as a technology integrator and service providers to drive the adoption of the Smart Edge Platform.
Shank further added that their company would collaborate with Intel to develop new edge computing use cases.
