Gentex Corporation acquires Israel‘s Guardian Optical Technologies

Gentex Corporation, an automotive solution provider, has recently announced the purchase of Guardian Optical Technologies, an Israel-based startup that pioneered a unique, multi-modal sensor technology to deliver a comprehensive suite of driver- and cabin-monitoring solutions for the automobile sector.

An infrared-sensitive, high-resolution camera that combines depth perception, machine vision, and micro-vibration detection is the center of Guardian's technology.

This innovative sensor setup allows the system to assess the behavior, gestures, and actions of the driver and the entire car cockpit and all its objects and occupants.

The software automatically scans, tracks, and determines the actual location of every vehicle rider and object, even without a direct line of sight, by merging two-dimensional video image identification with 3D depth mapping and optical motion analysis. It can recognize even the tiniest movements, such as heartbeats.

As per reports, Gentex has been a long-time supplier of electro-optical devices to the automotive, aerospace, and fire-fighting industries worldwide.

It's highly regarded for offering connected-car technologies and innovative technological systems that improve driver visibility and increase driving safety to nearly every major automaker.

Gentex Chief Technology Officer, Neil Boehm said that Guardian leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision algorithms for developing all-inclusive, in-cabin detecting functionality for today's vehicles.

It can monitor driver awareness, fine-tune airbag deployment, follow passenger behavior, and even detect the presence of a child napping in a car seat in the back of the vehicle with only one sensor module.

Furthermore, Gentex's cabin monitoring capabilities have been strengthened by the Guardian acquisition.

Displays, cameras, and various ADAS features have been included in the company's smart rearview mirrors for decades. Since the interior mirror section provides an excellent view of the driver and the entire vehicle cabin, it is a perfect site for installing the in-cabin monitoring camera.
