Wind River Studio to deploy Europe’s first Open RAN for Vodafone

Vodafone has apparently chosen Wind River Studio for building the first commercial Open RAN in Europe. It is speculated to be one of the largest in the world. The British telecom company has plans to expand the Open RAN architecture around the world and be at the forefront of the upcoming digital transformation in Europe.

Wind River Studio will be hosting applications for Vodafone’s next-gen Open RAN through a distributed local cloud platform.

Vodafone has a huge presence in Africa and Europe. The company aims to establish connections for a bright future. Given the scale and experience of the company, projects like these will help them guide society in the right direction.

Vodafone has garnered over 28 million fixed broadband customers, over 300 million mobile customers, over 123 million IoT device connections, and over 22 million TV consumers as of March 31, 2021.

Operators need to upscale their businesses to cater to the ever-increasing demands for 5G services like VR and AR. In addition, they need to attain low latency, performance at an optimum level, and offer newer operational models. RAN seems to be the solution to this as data processing needs to be carried out at ultra-low latency to deliver 5G services to customers.

The Open RAN architecture increases the rollout speed, flexibility, makes the system agile and helps in cost reduction by utilizing off-the-shelf commercial hardware and other open solutions.

Vodafone has been at the forefront when it comes to the adoption of Open RAN. Vodafone UK plans to expand the supply chain by collaborating with new vendors and replace a significant portion of the company’s old equipment using Open RAN technology.

Wind River Studio has an extensive experience working as an on-field supplier of cloud infrastructure technology owing to which Vodafone chose them for deploying the Open RAN architecture across Europe.
