Walmart’s recalled aromatherapy spray tests positive for deadly bacteria

According to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an aromatherapy spray sold at Walmart has been tested positive for a hazardous bacteria that is connected to numerous illnesses and two deaths.

Walmart has recalled the Better Homes and Gardens Lavender, Chamomile Essential Oil Pervaded Aromatherapy Room Spray as soon as a sample was tested for Burkholderia pseudomallei came out to be positive, which leads to melioidosis. The CPSC states that melioidosis is not easy to diagnose and can be fatal.

Reportedly, the recall consists of 6 different scents sold at more than 50 Walmart stores and on the retailer's website. The spray bottles were sold from February to late October when Walmart discontinued the offering.

The presence of Burkholderia pseudomallei was first discovered by laboratory testing by the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), which was the same type of bacteria that affected four people in the United States earlier this year.

The CDC has been looking into four cases of melioidosis, which were reported in Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, and Georgia. As per the agency, two of the people out of the four died.

However, the CPSC informed that the source of the four infections is yet to be identified by the CDC. Although the sample that agency took from the spray bottle consists of dangerous bacteria, said CPSC.

The CDC is coordinating with health departments in Kansas, Minnesota, and Texas to discover is the other three patients have used this spray or any another similar product.

The CDC states that every year, approximately 12 cases of melioidosis are reported in the U.S. Most of the cases are reported in people who travel or live in the other parts of the world where the bacteria naturally occur, like parts of South and Southeast Asia and northern Australia.

Moreover, the deadly bacteria can produce a wide range of symptoms and be mistaken for common ailments like the flu or a cold.
