Telstra is working on new technology to block scam SMS messages
Telstra, an Australian telecommunications company, has reportedly started testing the new technology in the scam messaging space. As per reliable sources, the new technology will block scam SMS messages as the number of scams received by the Australian population has reached high levels.
This year, around 11,100 SMS reported were submitted to Telstra by customers compared to just 50 in 2020.
As the SMS scams have gained popularity, the firm is working on finding a solution.
The tool is intended to automatically distinguish and lump scam SMS as they move across the network of Telstra to discontinue them before they appear on a customer’s mobile phone.
This new technology applies knowledge of what a scam SMS looks like and can automatically scan the message content in search for mistrustful patterns and other characteristics like sender, number of messages sent, time, and the recipient.
Commenting on the innovative move, Andy Penn, Telstra CEO cited that it is very important to understand that even with all the work, this will not be a complete solution to curb scams.
In addition, no technology is ideal, and fake actors will always find new ways to scam Australians, and SMS would probably continue to be a part of it. Furthermore, Andy stated that it is required to be alerted to understand whether the message received is fake or not.
Speculations have it that the company is expanding its capability to spot and block scams in all their forms on its network, across phone, emails, and SMS. The firm is also seeking to keep Australia safer and lower the amount of money irreversibly gone to scammers.
Telstra is pleased to fight these complicated issues with the help of the Federal Government, which is offering the required guidance and supervisory modification for supporting the development and use of this technical capability.
