Social media platforms blocked in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of blasts

The government has decided to temporarily block Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites for restricting the spread of false news

The government of Sri Lanka has reportedly announced the temporary blocking of various social media services after explosions swept through the country, killing around 207 people and causing injuries to hundreds more.

Sources familiar with the matter informed that in total eight blasts were reported till now, including at three churches and hotels, on Easter Sunday. Prime minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe has termed the blasts as a terrorist incident.

According to Udaya Seneviratne, President’s secretary, the government has decided to temporarily block Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites for restricting the spread of false news. In addition, the government said that all the services will be reinstated once the investigations regarding the attacks have been settled.

Like other emerging nations, Sri Lanka has also previously been a victim with misinformation. Sources mentioned that the government has also claimed fake news shared on Facebook and social media channels has helped to spread hostility and violence against the Muslim minority of the country.

Apparently, other countries like India have also stated that messaging apps like WhatsApp have greatly contributed towards the spread of false information, encouraging the global social media company to add limits to the number of groups any particular message can be sent to.

In recent years, nations such as Turkey and Iran have also blocked access to social media sites amid political unrest and protests, sources commented.

Ruchika Budhraja, Facebook spokesperson, was quoted saying that their Facebook teams have been working to back the law enforcement and first responders in Sri Lanka, as well as to recognize and eliminate content which violates the company’s standards.

The social networking company is aware of the government’s statement concerning the temporary blocking of social media sites, but is committed towards managing its services and serving the country and community during this tragic time.
