Qualcomm partners with ByteDance on XR devices ecosystem

MWC 2022 flexed off in Barcelona with launching phones from companies including TCL, Honor and Nokia. However, Qualcomm and its Snapdragon ecosystem were the companies that stood tall at the show.

Qualcomm and its Snapdragon platform are the mainstays at which many products are built and unveiled at the mobile trade show, like the new Lenovo ThinkPad X13s. Also, the firm surprised the show with announcements of its own.

Qualcomm President and CEO, Cristiano Amon said that mobile technology is going everywhere. He outlined declarations that will form the basis of the firm’s vision for the next ten years. Among the broad-ranging updates across 5G, Bluetooth and audio were the outlines of a new collaboration with ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.

The collaboration will witness the two companies developing XR, otherwise known as spatial computing, or metaverse-ready technologies, like virtual and augmented reality. Last year, ByteDance bought virtual reality headset maker Pico, which will be the basis for its entering into XR and the metaverse.

Furthermore, Qualcomm already has one major partner in this range in the form of Meta, which it works with on Oculus. But as phones, Qualcomm is not limiting its XR development collaboration to just one company. It wants to strengthen its role as the “ticket to the metaverse,” it said during its MWC presentation.

The firm always believes that many other environments will grip these technologies and bring scale, said Amon. They are collaborating on software and hardware for enabling a global XR environment.

Moreover, Qualcomm’s key announcement was the first modem-to-antenna 5G system with the Snapdragon X70, integrated AI. AI capabilities will help advance 5G performance by enhancing speed, coverage, latency, and power efficiency across sub-6 bandwidths and millimeter waves.

This modem could be appearing in the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset later this year.
