MTN announces capital of $1 BN to support Digital Ghana Agenda

MTN Ghana has reportedly assured to spend an enormous amount of US$1 billion-plus on Network Infrastructure and Information Systems (NIIS) in the coming five years for supporting the Digital Ghana Agenda and place Ghana as a leader of Africa's digital transformation.

Selorm Adadevoh, CEO of MTN Ghana, announced the novel move at the 25th Anniversary Dinner of MTN. It hosted a grand audience, including several stakeholders from regulators, distributors, media, government, and business partners.

He also notified that MTN is co-operating with the government to supply an ICT Hub geared towers creating West Africa's first innovation city in Ghana; ensuring that the country plays an essential role in the digital transformation journey of the continent.

Selorm stated that the team believes that the establishment of the AfCFTA is touted to emerge as a breakthrough moment for the role of digitization in the development of Africa, which is why it has become more crucial to achieve the digital Ghana Agenda.

It was also remarked that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for the data had outstripped its supply, which has led to a data deficit that requires to be bridged to locate Ghana well to lead its role in AfCFTA.

According to credible sources, the country's long-term vision to become a digital economy requires huge and constant investment in technology and innovation in the coming five years. In this reference, MTN is pledging to spend around US$1 billion in NIIS over the next five years, starting with this year, for bridging the digital gap and ensuring the digital economy achievements.

Commenting further on the ICH hub promise, Adadevoh stated that the hub would enable the government to provide ICT training to many young individuals in the country and beyond, encouraging SME digital innovation and creating new ideas will also be a purpose for the big technology giants, beyond Twitter, into Ghana which will offer even more significant opportunities to citizens of Ghana.
