Mondelez India uses VR & AR tech to streamline its supply chain

Considering digitization as the key enabler for the long-term business approach, Mondelez India, the unit of U.S-based confectionery, food, holding and beverage and snack food giant Mondelez International, has started incorporating advanced technologies like AR & VR to streamline its supply chain.

According to sources, the company is using AR & VR tech which empowers the project management teams to synchronize with people from other countries with ease and aid in commissioning one of the mega supply chain lines as soon as possible.

Nandkumar Kulkarni, Integrated Supply Chain Director of Mondelez India, said that the firm started utilizing the latest tech in advance compared to the other FMCG/CPG organizations which delivered varied results during the pandemic.

He said that the last two years have brought several uncertainties for businesses—unexpected challenges that disturb the complete supply chains.

The COVID pandemic made it impossible for vendors to gain access to production plants. Mondelez India would have waited for the things to settle and then executed the production lines, but it came up with an AR/VR-based solution for addressing these challenges.

Mr. Kulkarni says that with this technology, the firm could demonstrate how the line is getting empowered, electronic components or PLC are getting synchronized, and the skill-building of people and troubleshooting issues are done.

Mondelez also leveraged AR and VR tech for interacting concurrently with global as well as Indian experts for building capability, commissioning and ramping up the production on the shop floor, added Kulkarni.

He believes that other than making the processes led digitally, it is important to create a digital quotient inside the teams that could assist them in understanding the digital experiments and concepts faster.

Mr. Kulkarni also claims that many organizations continued with traditional production methods, and hence, encounter some wastage in the system. However, Mondelez could manage the demand and also shape the demand carefully to avoid wastage to a large extent using advanced algorithms.
