The application was launched back in 2015 and was Google’s attempt to with the growing popularity of Twitch.
The decision to shut down the standalone application comes as the company has already moved the app’s features to the original YouTube app.

Google LLC (Google), a renowned multinational technology firm, has reportedly announced that it would be shutting down the YouTube Gaming application on 30th of May 2019 since it has moved the app’s features on the original YouTube app.

Reports cite, the standalone gaming app was launched back in 2015 to allow content creators, especially gamers, to stream live videos and compete with live streaming video platform, Twitch.

According to an update posted on Google Support, the standalone YouTube Gaming app would be completely shut down and users would no longer be able to access the platform. Instead users would be redirected to the new YouTube Gaming destination on the main YouTube app. Moreover, all users’ channel memberships would be transferred over to the main app.

YouTube was known as one of the world’s biggest platforms for video gaming content. However, with the advent as well as popularity of live streaming platforms such as Twitch, the launch of a standalone gaming platform in 2015 made sense.

Initially a hit, the platform’s popularity has been waning steadily since, which convinced the company that maintaining a standalone app was not necessary any longer.

Now, the main YouTube application would be featuring a separate gaming section. Users could access this section to search for popular live streams, uploads as well as other gaming industry related content.

With only a few days left, users would be forced to access the dedicated gaming section in the app to view gaming-related content. The section could also be accessed through a browser by going to youtube.com/gaming.
