Google bans businesses from using RCS for ad promotions in India
  • Some of the major banks and leading firms were reported to be misusing the feature
  • Google claims that messaging in the Android Messages app has recently touched 500 million monthly active users

Global tech behemoth, Google LLC has reportedly banned organizations from leveraging Rich Communication Services (RCS) for promotion in India following reports of rampant spam by some businesses.

Being the largest market for Google, in terms of users, rise in spam in India implicates a setback for RCS which the tech giant believes would become the future of SMS messaging. It was developed in unison between some of the major industry players to amplify traditional SMS with upgraded features like end-to-end encryption and richer texts.

Last month, Google reported that RCS messaging in the Android Messages app had touched 500 million active users monthly. In addition, during its developer conference, the firm urged mobile operating systems to support RCS, which is further intended to assist businesses in reaching out to users in a more cooperating manner.

Recently, well-recognized giants like Samsung, Google and some other companies, including several telecom operators, have implemented RCS support for thousands of millions of users around the globe.

Although, as per the recent reports, many Indian firms, including the leading banks and other lending institutions, have been exploiting the feature by sending spontaneous promotional materials to any phone number they can find across the country.

Many users have earlier turned to Twitter to express their discontentment, and their words seem to be having reached Google.

Furthermore, a recent statement released by the tech giant noted that some businesses are mistreating anti-spam policies by sending promotional messages to users in India. Therefore, Google has deactivated the feature as it works with the industry to enhance user experience.
