General Electric (GE), one of the world’s leading technology firms, has announced a comprehensive “Energy Transition Plan” for Iraq, outlining its innovative strategy to help the country transition to a cleaner future.

Announced at the Rebuild Iraq event in Baghdad, the Energy Transition Plan is built around several major factors that will support the government's long-term goal of improving Iraq's electricity infrastructure and promoting energy sector diversification and decarbonization.

GE claims that the plan includes several key aspects that will unlock new opportunities and developments in green energy in Iraq. Some of them include:

Power plant maintenance, rehabilitation, and optimization; boosting performance by 5-10% and converting assets for a possible CO2 reduction of 20%.
Using hydrogen for generating power in tandem with carbon capture systems to reduce up to 90% CO2 emissions from gas turbine exhaust.
Transforming Iraq into a energy center; enhancing an interconnected grid that is smart, reliable, and more sustainable.

Dr. Abdurrahman Khalidi, Chief Technology Officer, GE Gas Power (EMEA), said that they have constantly emphasized on supporting Iraq’s power generation development through solutions like securing financing to implementing cutting-edge technology.

He said that it is vital to ramp up the country's transition to cleaner energy systems, which will provide a triple benefit, i.e. deployment of diverse sources of energy to meet rising demand; the achievement of carbon reduction commitments through the deployment of more energy-efficient renewable and gas power sources; and the establishment of a stable platform for reliable, safe, and cleaner energy for the future.

He further added that the ‘Energy Transition Plan’ is one of the most wide-ranging approaches, covering all feasible solutions the country can utilize. It provides an efficient mix of tailored technologies and products for decarbonization across Iraq's unique energy environment.

GE's international and local expertise can assist Iraq to achieve decarbonization by making use of capabilities like world-record-holding high-efficient gas turbines to upgrading technologies to quick and adaptable aeroderivatives.
