Amazon.com has reportedly ordered about 40 electric vans from the StreetScooter unit of Deutsche Post, a Germany-based electric vehicle manufacturer, to deliver in the German city of Munich. Amazon confirmed that the aim was to meet the goals of being carbon neutral by the year 2040.

Apparently, StreetScooter has installed around 60 charging stations at the distribution center of Amazon located outside Munich. Amazon has been working on building its own business for delivery in Germany from the past few years which happens to be the second-largest market. This business development is essentially posed as a challenge to all the major logistics companies such as Deutsche Post DHL.

For the record, Deutsche Post DHL had acquired StreetScooter in the year 2014 and the company uses around 10,000 out of the 12,000 vehicles that it has put on the road. The subsidiary has been unprofitable and has been seeking new customers and investors to ramp up the production further.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the companies have stated that the Work L delivery van with zero-emission produced by StreetScooter shall be made to debut by DHL in two of the urban U.S. markets. The deliveries shall start in the spring of 2020.

Amazon Europe’s sustainability head, Adam Elman commented that the company has already ordered about 200 more electric vehicles from various other suppliers that it would begin using in Germany from this year. Mercedes-Benz of Daimler has commented recently that it had delivered nearly 10 of its eVito electric transporter to the e-commerce giant.

Seemingly, Amazon had made an announcement in the previous year that it was going to order about 100,000 electric vans from Rivian Automotive LLC, an America-based automaker and automotive technology startup, before it had even begun with the commercial production, with the deliveries expected to start from 2021.
